Job Description

The Concrete Superintendent is responsible for overseeing all field operations related to concrete construction projects, including foundations, slabs, tilt-wall panels, elevated decks, structural concrete, parking structures, and site concrete. This role ensures projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with quality standards, contract documents, and company policies.

Key Responsibilities

Project Execution

  • Direct and coordinate all concrete construction activities on assigned projects.
  • Review project plans, specifications, schedules, and contract requirements.
  • Develop and maintain short-term and long-term work plans.
  • Ensure labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractors are properly coordinated.
  • Monitor production rates and adjust manpower as needed to meet project schedules.
  • Lead daily planning meetings and coordinate work with project management teams.

Field Supervision

  • Supervise field personnel, foremen, subcontractors, and craft workers.
  • Provide leadership, training, and mentoring to field staff.
  • Ensure crews understand project scope, quality expectations, and safety requirements.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to verify work progress and compliance.

Safety Management

  • Promote and enforce company safety policies and OSHA regulations.
  • Conduct daily safety meetings and job hazard analyses.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions.
  • Maintain a safe work environment for all personnel on site.

Quality Control

  • Verify all concrete work meets project specifications and industry standards.
  • Coordinate inspections, testing, and quality assurance activities.
  • Review concrete placement procedures, reinforcing steel installation, formwork, and finishing operations.
  • Identify and resolve quality issues before they impact project schedules.

Scheduling & Coordination

  • Work closely with Project Managers to maintain project schedules.
  • Coordinate deliveries of concrete, reinforcing steel, embeds, formwork, and equipment.
  • Manage subcontractor activities and sequencing of work.
  • Assist with look-ahead schedules and recovery plans when necessary.

Cost Control

  • Monitor labor productivity and equipment utilization.
  • Identify and communicate potential cost impacts or change order opportunities.
  • Assist with budgeting and forecasting of field operations.
  • Minimize rework and material waste.

Client Relations

  • Maintain professional relationships with owners, architects, engineers, inspectors, and subcontractors.
  • Participate in project meetings and provide progress updates.
  • Address field issues promptly and professionally.

Qualifications

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field preferred.

Experience

  • 7+ years of concrete construction experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in a Superintendent or Foreman leadership role.
  • Experience managing commercial, industrial, multifamily, healthcare, education, or heavy civil concrete projects preferred.
  • Experience with structural concrete, tilt-wall construction, elevated decks, and foundations preferred.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of concrete construction methods and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
  • Knowledge of OSHA safety regulations and best practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with project scheduling software and construction management platforms.
  • Ability to manage multiple crews and subcontractors simultaneously.

Certifications (Preferred)

  • OSHA 30-Hour Certification
  • First Aid/CPR Certification
  • ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Certification
  • NCCER Superintendent Certification

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk active construction sites daily.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds as needed.
  • Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and navigate uneven terrain.
