Structural Steel Fitter Trainer
Full-Time | 1st & 2nd Shift Training Support
We are seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fitter Trainer to lead and develop a fitter training program within a structural steel fabrication environment. This position will train new hires, develop existing fitters, and ensure employees meet established quality and production standards.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced fitter who enjoys teaching others and can break down complex fabrication processes into clear, practical steps.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct assessments for new-hire fitters and evaluate skill levels.
- Lead a structured 90-day fitter training program from entry level through certification.
- Train and develop C- and B-level fitters to advance their skills and classifications.
- Teach proper fit-up techniques, blueprint and weld-symbol interpretation, layout, and fabrication procedures.
- Train employees on proper use of fit-up tools, torches, grinders, layout equipment, cranes, and rigging.
- Monitor trainee progress and provide coaching and additional instruction when needed.
- Conduct objective skills evaluations and maintain accurate training records.
- Ensure trainees meet established quality standards before certification.
- Work closely with production leadership to ensure training aligns with shop needs and production requirements.
- Support training coverage across multiple shifts while maintaining a standard 40-hour workweek.
Qualifications
- 5+ years of structural steel fitting/fabrication experience.
- Experience with tapered tubular pole fabrication required.
- A-level fitter classification or equivalent demonstrated proficiency.
- 2+ years of experience training, mentoring, or leading shop employees preferred.
- Strong ability to read and interpret blueprints and welding symbols.
- Thorough knowledge of fit-up tools, torches, grinders, layout equipment, cranes, and rigging.
- Strong understanding of welding requirements and fit-up quality standards.
- Ability to objectively evaluate employees and hold trainees accountable to established standards.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office; experience with ERP systems is a plus.
- Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred.
