Assistant Project Manager / Project Engineer

Location: Petersburg, VA

Position Overview:

We are seeking a detail-oriented and driven Assistant Project Manager / Project Engineer to support the successful delivery of a fast-paced, high-profile $50 million construction project. This role requires a motivated individual with strong organizational and communication skills, capable of working in a high-demand environment where precision, speed, and coordination are critical.

The selected candidate will work closely with the Project Manager and field teams to manage project documentation, track critical milestones, coordinate subcontractors, and ensure the timely and quality delivery of all phases of construction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the overall management of a large-scale, fast-track commercial project from preconstruction through closeout.
  • Understanding and able to read contract drawings and spec books
  • Ability to formulate submittals from spec book requirements
  • Coordinate and track critical path items and procurement schedules to avoid delays.
  • Manage and log RFIs, submittals, change orders, and all project-related correspondence in real-time using project management platforms (e.g., Procore).
  • Collaborate closely with field superintendents to ensure subcontractors are properly sequenced and supported.
  • Maintain and update detailed construction schedules and look-aheads to align with aggressive project deadlines.
  • Lead regular coordination meetings with subcontractors and vendors to maintain accountability and execution.
  • Assist with buyout processes, including bid leveling, scope development, and subcontract preparation.
  • Review project plans and specifications for constructability and conflict resolution.
  • Work with the PM team to process applications for payment, track budget exposures, and manage cost events.
  • Monitor compliance with all site safety protocols and quality control procedures.
  • Prepare accurate and timely project reports and meeting minutes.
  • Support punch list and project closeout activities including as-builts and warranty documentation.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field (preferred).
  • 1-5 years of relevant construction experience on projects over $10M.
  • Strong familiarity with fast-track construction methodologies and sequencing.
  • Ability to thrive in a deadline-driven, high-pressure project environment.
  • Excellent organizational and follow-up skills with acute attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and coordination skills across all levels—owners, architects, engineers, subcontractors, and internal teams.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, and construction project management tools such as Procore, Primavera P6, or MS Project.
  • Understanding of CSI divisions, contract language, and project logistics.
