CPA Public Tax Partner

Managing Director – Tax CPA (Partner Track)
Eastern South Dakota / Western Minnesota Region

Our client, a well-established and highly respected CPA firm serving the Brookings, Moody, Pipestone, and Lincoln Counties, is seeking a Tax-focused CPA to step into a Managing Director role with a clear Partner track. This is a rare opportunity for a proven tax professional with both technical expertise and leadership ambition to join a thriving practice and transition into firm ownership.

The Opportunity

  • Join a full-service CPA firm currently comprised of two Partners, two CPA associates, a senior bookkeeper/tax preparer, and dedicated administrative support.
  • One of the firm’s current partners is planning retirement in the next 12–24 months, creating a direct pathway to Managing Partner.
  • Build upon a strong foundation of long-term client relationships and play a leading role in shaping the future of the firm.

Compensation & Structure

  • Competitive and negotiable salary + performance bonus.
  • Full-time, primarily in-office with limited remote flexibility (1 day/week).
  • Reasonable Probationary period resulting in a formal grant of firm ownership
  • Additional equity purchase opportunities are available to increase ownership stake.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead preparation and review of complex individual, partnership, farm, corporate, trust/estate tax returns.
  • Provide proactive tax planning and high-level advisory services to a diverse client base.
  • Manage and mentor associates, junior accountants, and support staff; foster a culture of accuracy, efficiency, and professional growth.
  • Oversee accounting processes including general ledger review, month-end/year-end close, financial statement preparation, and compliance.
  • Guide firm operations and participate in long-term strategic planning.
  • Maintain and grow trusted client relationships while ensuring regulatory compliance and audit readiness.

Ideal Candidate Profile

  • Licensed CPA with 5+ seasons of recent Public Accounting experience (Tax emphasis).
  • Deep technical knowledge of corporate, partnership, trust/estate, and individual tax laws.
  • Strong background in GAAP, general ledger management, and financial reporting.
  • Experience with QuickBooks and modern accounting/tax preparation systems.
  • Proven leadership skills with ability to mentor, delegate, and manage team performance.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with desire to assume equity ownership and leadership responsibility.
